Perlan—literally “The Pearl”—is one of Reykjavík’s most iconic landmarks, both architecturally and culturally. Perched atop Öskjuhlíð Hill, this gleaming glass‑dome complex crowns six giant geothermal hot‑water tanks, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the city and its rugged surroundings .

Opened: June 21, 1991, built by architect Ingimundur Sveinsson .


Structure: A steel‑framed glass dome perched atop six 4M‑liter geothermal tanks. Four tanks still function, one houses the ice cave, another the planetarium .
