The Saga Museum in Reykjavík offers an immersive journey into Iceland's Viking Age and medieval history. Located at Grandagarður 2 in the Old Harbour area, the museum brings to life the epic tales of the Icelandic sagas through 17 meticulously crafted wax figures and detailed dioramas. These exhibits depict key historical figures and events, such as the founding of the Alþingi, the Battle of Örlygsstaðir, and the tragic story of Sister Katrín, Iceland’s first heretic. The figures are dressed in authentic, hand-dyed wool and linen garments, providing a vivid portrayal of 9th to 11th-century Icelandic life.
Visitors can enhance their experience with an audio guide available in multiple languages, including English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Icelandic. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last admission at 5:00 PM. Admission fees are 2,500 ISK for adults, 2,000 ISK for students and seniors, and 1,000 ISK for children. Children under 6 years old can enter for free.
The Saga Museum is wheelchair and stroller accessible and is located near other attractions such as the Maritime Museum and Whales of Iceland. It's a family-friendly destination that offers a captivating glimpse into Iceland's rich cultural heritage.
