The Sun Voyager, or Sólfar in Icelandic, is a striking stainless steel sculpture located along Reykjavík's scenic waterfront promenade, Sæbraut. Designed by Icelandic artist Jón Gunnar Árnason, it was unveiled in 1990 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Reykjavík's founding. Often mistaken for a Viking ship, the sculpture is actually an abstract "dreamboat," symbolizing hope, progress, and the spirit of exploration. Its sleek, skeletal form evokes a vessel setting sail toward the sun, embodying humanity's quest for discovery and new horizons.
The Sun Voyager is situated near the Harpa Concert Hall, offering panoramic views of Faxaflói Bay and Mount Esja. Its reflective surface captures the changing light of day, making it a popular spot for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sculpture is bathed in golden hues. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the nearby Sculpture & Shore Walk, which features other public art installations and connects to various attractions in the city
Whether you're an art enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a picturesque spot to relax, the Sun Voyager stands as a testament to Iceland's rich cultural heritage and its enduring connection to the sea.
